Cupid and Psyche: The parts of the story that speak for my heart

Cupid whispered, “You have been very brave, my love. Making your night journey to the mountain. Sending the others away. Then letting Zephyr bring you here. Your soul is as beautiful as your face. I shall love you forever, dear wife.”

Psyche had been praised by thousands of men in thousands of ways. But she had never heard such sweet words. “This must be love,” she thought to herself. She tightened her arms round her husband.

Psyche felt her life was almost perfect. Just one thing bothered her. So one night she broached her concern.

“Dear husband, I only see you at night,” she said. “And then I don’t see you at all really. Is there some reason you wish to remain hidden?”

“Aren’t the emotions you feel better than what you might see, dear wife? came his reply. “Believe me, your heart is much more reliable than your eyes. And twice as honest. Weren’t there times when you wished you could cover yourself? Just to see if people loved you for yourself, not your beauty?”

Psyche was not surprised Cupid knew her deepest wishes. It seemed they spoke, acted, and even dreamed as one.

Cupid continued, “Would you want me to adore you only for your beauty? Because I confess, dear Psyche, I first was attracted by your loveliness. But now after knowing you, I realize how much more I love you for your spirit.”

“I would rather have your respect than ten thousand compliments about my face,” Psyche admitted.

“Well, you understand then. I also do not wish to be judged by my appearance. No, judge me by my actions and your own heart.”

As the flame wavered In her shaking hand, Psyche tiptoed back to the bed. She shone the light on her husband’s face and gave a gasp.

There was a god sleeping in her bed! And a bow and quiver rested on the floor!

Cupid was her husband? Cupid, the god of love?

Psyche breathed a sigh of relief. Then she leaned closer for another look. His beauty took her breath away. His face was so youthful, so strong, so handsome! Shining golden hair ringed his face. And a pair of pure white wings were folded behind his shoulders.

But Psyche had leaned too close. Before she could catch it, the candle tipped in her hand. A large drop of hot wax fell onto Cupid’s shoulder.

Cupid awoke with a start and looked straight into Psyche’s eyes. It was as if he were reading her mind. Then in a flash, he had seized the candle and blown it out. Next moment he was out of bed and on his feet.

Psyche reached out to hold him. But he pushed her away and lifted into the air.

“No! Please, dear husband! Don’t leave me!” Psyche cried.

Cupid’s voice came from the window ledge. “Did I have to be beautiful for you to love me, dear wife?”

“No!” Psyche shouted. “I loved you before!”

“No, Psyche. If you had truly loved me, you wouldn’t have had to see my face. You would have trusted your heart.”

With that, Cupid flew out the window into the night air. Psyche ran into the courtyard after him. She tried to follow the sound of his voice.

“True beauty lies in the heart. That is why I loved you, Psyche. Your heart was beautiful. But it had grown ugly from fear and doubt. And love cannot live where the heart does not trust. Farewell.”

After the young wife was bathed and freshly dressed, she was ushered to Jupiter’s throne. With the eye of a true lover of beauty, Jupiter looked her up and down.

Finally he said, “Your husband has told me of your bravery. You have the form to match your soul, my dear. Such beauty must not be allowed to fade.” He gestured and a god brought forward a cup of nectar.

“Drink that, Psyche. Drink it and become immortal, like your husband. For there is an invisible cord which ties your hearts together. May it remain unbroken to the end of time!”

With those words, the wedding feasting began. All the gods came-even Venus. Selfish and jealous as she was, the goddess knew when to give in. After all, no one can defeat the most powerful force in the universe: Love.

 ….ในวันที่ฉันมีความสุขกับการพบปะผู้คนแต่ต้องมานั่งร้องให้เพราะเธอเมื่อกลับถึงบ้าน

I can’t say thank you enough for those known and unknown friends who voted for my video at the Colorado Snow at First Sight website which it supported me to be a semi-finalist. To each of you I owe so many heartfelt words of thanks. It is the best thing if one can live one’s dream but if one can also help others live their dreams, it is the next best. Please accept my deep gratitude and bow.

 

 

[About the contest: Colorado Tourism Office’s “Snow at First Sight” launched Colorado’s first ever social media campaign and contest. On October 12 2010, MMG Mardiks, the agency, on behalf of the Colorado Tourism Office, began a global search for three people who had never experienced snow before. The applicants submitted their video entries, three minutes length at maximum, introducing themselves and telling why they should win the contest. Ten semi-finalists who were invited for the audition in Denver were consisted of five entries with highest public votes and another five from panel votes. The three lucky winners spent three months in Colorado experiencing the state’s legendary winter season and everything it has to offer, all expenses paid. They wrote about their experiences on www.SnowAtFirstSight.com  and posted regular updates on social networks including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr.]

 

On January 5-8, 2010, I went to Denver, USA, for the audition of the Snow at First Sight Contest ran by the Colorado Tourism Office. It’s a great experience! I’m not the loser. I’m just not the winner ^_^ (check this out! http://www.coloradosnowatfirstsight.com)

 

 

        

 

  

 

I was supposed to leave Chiang Mai International Airport to Incheon International Airport in Seoul, Korea, on the night of 4^th January at 1:55 am (5^th January morning), but when I arrived to the airport, there was a sign indicated that the flight was delayed to 3:15 am due to heavy snow storm in Seoul. That was how the trip of the snow virgin from Thailand began!

 

It took 4:45 hours to reach to Incheon International airport where the snow storm left behind half a foot of icy powder. That was my snow at first sight! I wish I could run out of the plane and roll over on that white powdery ground! As my first flight was delayed, I had to change my connecting flight from Seoul to Tokyo Narita, Japan. I had no time to waste because it was almost boarding time. I had to run for a long distance, cursing the airport for not providing travellators on the way to the gates, but only on the way from the gates! The inspectors eyed me cautiously when I passed the scanner because I was breathing like a fish out of water.

 

I made it to the gate just in time, soaked in sweat under a puffy jacket and snow boots, carrying a heavy backpack. I honestly thought that I would have an asthma, the symptom which has never visited me for a decade. I sank on the seat concentrating on my respiration while regretting that I should have kept the medicine in my backpack, not in the check-in baggage. Fortunately, I felt alright after a while. Phew!!

 

There were 3 connecting flights. After 2:05 hours on the plane from Seoul in Korea, to Tokyo Narita in Japan, I had to fly to Los Angeles which took 9:35 hours. I couldn’t sleep on the plane as we know it isn’t comfortable at all, especially when we sit on the aisle where we don’t have the window to lean on. The suffering reminded me of the time I flew from Thailand to Brazil (age 17) when I had to transit in Tokyo Narita, Dallas in Texas, Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre in Brazil and a 4 hours bus ride to get to Santa Maria town! On that helluva journey, it made me even thought that i sat too much my ass was flatten! Haha.

 

The struggling at the LA airport was worse than at Seoul. At the immigration, the lines were so long that it took me more than 1 hour to proceed! It looked like everybody on God’s earth was there to enter to the United States. I wouldn’t feel so anxious had I didn’t need to catch another flight to Denver. I was in terminal B and I had to find Frontier counter in terminal 6. What a big airport and i had no clue of how to catch the shuttle buses! Okay, no more complaining. I finally arrived to Denver with a staff waiting for me at the exit carrying the Snow at First Sight sign.

 

I arrived to the Curtis Hotel in Denver late in the afternoon of January 5, (Denver time). There was a welcome meeting in the evening. This was when I found out that only 7 out of 10 semi-finalists were able to come to the audition. We reviewed itinerary, criteria and guidelines. Then we had our first meal together at the Office Corner restaurant at the lobby. I felt dizzy and wanted nothing but bed because I was knackered from the not-seem-to-end flying.

 

In the morning of January 6, seven semi-finalists who were grouped into two groups were asked to complete an immersion activity in Denver. We were randomly issued a theme; the two themes are Arts & Culture and History & Heritage. I was grouped with Sara and Deena from USA, and Ruchu, a Nepali girl from Melbourne, Australia.  Another group was consisted of Margurita, Lyssa, and Trevor, all are from USA. So this means I was the only black head Asian. (Excuse me, may I have 10 seconds to feel proud of myself please? Haha.) We ventured out into Denver, using our wits and a Visit Denver visitor’s guide, to uncover what the city has to offer within our category of History & Heritage. We were issued a Flip camera to document our experience and had to create a 3-minute video out of it. We along with the audience ventured together around town. We shared them what we saw through our eyes. Too bad I don’t have this video to show you! I talked about different kinds of gold made in Denver during the gold rush era in the Colorado History Museum and gave an introduction to Molly Brown’s House. Additionally, each of us had to fill out the social media test form, which includes creating one blog post, one sample tweet and one sample Facebook post. There were 4 laptops for 7 contestants to use. After a long wait, it was finally my turn. I was under pressure because they were already preparing the room for next activity and they actually began the one by one on-camera interview simulation!  I know that my English language can’t compare to other contestants but I did try my best. I would love to share what I wrote with you because it was what I felt at the moment and I wrote it from my heart.

Guys, I’m finally here in beautiful Colorado! After the miserable struggling of my visa application and a more than 24 hours journey with 3 transfers via Seoul, Tokyo, and Los Angeles, I arrived to Denver International Airport, the largest airport in America. The first moment I got to the outdoor to catch the shuttle bus to the Curits Hotel in downtown, the scenery of the mountains sleeping on the edge of the horizon immediately took my breath away! I remembered of the word in the audition itinerary reads “Welcome to beautiful Colorado” and I thought to myself that it is so true! I proved it with my own eyes that claiming beautiful Colorado isn’t a hyperbole, but I beg to differ, it’s stunning Colorado! (Check out www.colorado.com)

 

Today, we, the seven semi-finalists were divided into two groups for the Denver Immersion activity. My group was assigned to uncover the city under the theme of History and Heritage. We walked out of the hotel and experienced the first snow fall!! This is a dream come true! Denver is beautiful beyond my imagination, with light snow falling down, the icy piles of snow on the ground and beautiful buildings. On the way to find the State Capital, every little thing interested the eyes of a snow virgin like me. I couldn’t keep my eyes away from the surroundings. How I wish I had more eyes! I have seen the beautiful murals telling the history of Denver. I had my adventure through 150 years of Denver gold rush history. I have come to know that Denver is home of the famous survivor from the fateful Titanic voyage, the unsinkable Molly Brown (See http://www.mollybrown.org). Guys, this is just the two hours in town! I hope I will get to see more because Denver has so many things to offer.

The Social Media Test was followed by the on-camera interview simulation as mentioned above. It took around 10 minutes for each contestant. Then we played a game which introduced us to ski gears (Oh man! Ski boots are so heavy!). After a break of fun, there was Colorado Winter Relay led by Max Mancini, a Colorado-based professional telemark skier. The last activity was the panel interview on January 7. There were 6 interviewers from potential parties in Colorado who kindly flung questions to me for 15-20 minutes. Let your imagination run free of how I went through my interview. I only said the words of truth, be honest, open, and just be myself (but now I think I was too truthful haha). I knew that no matter how it ended, I would be happy and would never be regret if I tried my best. Frankly, I’m proud of myself for, if I dare say, having the bravery to challenge or to overcome my limitations. It ended with what I would like to call; a life-time experience! I’m grateful for having this colorful page of my life journey dairy!
